How To Commission Any Artist
Script | Artist (brown) • Client (white)

STEP 1 | Research
Its important to check your artists profile for any important comission info! Specific things to look out for could be whether or not they are taking comissions, price sheets, rules, and more!
sometimes this info is not readily available, and so thats when you can reach out to the artist directly and ask!
STEP 2 | Contact
For those who struggle with reaching out to artists due to social anxiety or just being generally nervous, Heres a script you can follow that may help!
"hello! are you currently taking comissions?" |
"Yes my commissions are open! What would you like?" |
"sorry my commissions are currently closed, however Id be happy to notify you when they are open again! My commissions may reopen in x days/weeks" |
Note
If you are an artist its best to have commission info easily accessible to make the commissioning process easier for your client! Also, instead of just turning down a potential client, I suggest working with them to find a timeframe where you could take their commission! it'll be nice to have a client be waiting for you when you reopen your commissions.
STEP 3 | Art
Having photo refrences from pinterest or google is the BEST way to share your idea with your artist! This can include poses, clothing, setting, style, or overall aesthetic! personally I find it SOOO helpful! remember, we arent mind readers!
"I would like 'x' please! is it okay if 'x'? id really love it if you could 'x! here are some references on the overall vibe I would like: " |
"ok! awesome! I can totally do that! Considering this is a colored peice with x and x and blah blah the total will be $X! How would you like to send payment?" |
Note
The commission process sometimes enters this interesting place where neither the artist nor client wants to bring up payment. The lines on the left are a good way for you as an artist to bring up payment! Before mentioning payment or the total of the piece, I personally think its very helpful to your client to breakdown the price and then tell them the total.
STEP 4 | Payment
Usually payment is done before the final piece is made. Personally I take payment after a sketch, or I take a % of it before and the remaining after the final piece!
-
BE SURE you have the ability and funds to buy the commission before reaching out to the artistNEVER haggle with an artist. Even if you are "going through a hard time". A commission is NOT a necessity, if you cant afford it use that money for needs not wants.
"do you accept 'x'?, How do you prefer to be paid? When would you like payment?" |
"All done! Thank you so much for the commission! It was so fun! here you go!" |
Note
Basic manners lol. Thank your client, see them off! Let them know they are appreciated!
STEP 5 | Final!
when requesting changes make sure to reassure the artist that you like the piece overall! that way it feels more like a tweak than a mistake by the artist!Never be afraid to request changes! The artist has been
compensated by YOU for this piece, so its your right to at least ask for changes! However, certain changes may be of extra cost depending on how out of the way it is.
also understand that an artist does not have to say "yes". If they say no, you must unfortunately take the art the way it is.
"omg its so good! could I request "x" be changed? I love it! would it possible for "x" to be added?" |
